_space to Grow!

Our five year plan is to extend the _space offer across the UK. We believe we can achieve this with five regional bases. Currently, we operate within the North East and Cumbria region and the Yorkshire and Humberside Region. Our latest office has opened to extend our reach to within the North West region.

Our new regional base for the North West is located at Lowry Plaza on Salford Quays; part of a major regeneration area that will be home to BBC’s Media City. It officially opened on August 1st and is looking for new opportunities whilst also playing a key part in delivering some major contracts for the company, including the multi-million pound Salford and Knowsley BSF schemes. more…

Celebrate Architecture with _space!

_space is proud to announce its involvement with the very first North East Festival of Architecture (NEFA). The festival, which runs from June 14th – 22nd, is an extension of previous years’ Architecture Week and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate upcoming design and architecture in the North East.

The focus of the event is three-fold; talks, tours and workshops and as a Titanium partner, _space supports the implementation of the event, its goals and ideas.

We are involved in the proceedings too; our Managing Director of Architecture, Andy Roberts, will be introducing the guest lecturer at the RIBA President’s Medals tour on June 18th. A celebration of student excellence within the architecture industry, this is an important event in the calendar and one that should not be missed! It is being held in the Ellison Building at Northumbria University, where you will also have the opportunity to see an exhibition of work from the best new talent in the industry in an entrance foyer designed by _space.

_space also have an open house during this time and we’d like to invite anyone interested in finding out more about our business or the world of architecture to stop by for a tour of the building and a chat. If you’d like to come and visit us, please contact our Marketing Coordinator, Danielle Gibson, via e-mail at: Danielle.Gibson@creating-space.co.uk or call our offices on 0191 223 6600.

If you are interested in finding out more about NEFA, log onto www.northernarchitecture.com, which will provide you with more detailed information. more…

Hill Court Haven

_space is happy to announce that after months of blood, sweat and tears, our regeneration of the Hill Court Out of School Club for Children North East is finally complete.

In 2007, a challenge had been issued to _space’s Group 3, who specialise in education, to re-design Hill Court and make it a relaxed, colourful and enjoyable space for the children that use it. In a test worthy of Challenge Anneka, _space people teamed up with GB Building Solutions and spent their free time raising funds and encouraging contacts to donate materials and (in some cases) their time to bring the facility bang up to date with exciting, colourful designs and furnishings.

As the club is somewhere children go to spend their time in after school where they can do homework, play games and watch TV free from the pressures that they’ve experienced, creating a calm and peaceful area was intent behind the design. Alice Laverty, an Interior Designer from Group 3, was behind the design and created an area that accommodates a large amount of storage but manages to make the small space feel bigger. Design features here include a set of bespoke storage units (built by Ace Joinery), a bright curvy carpet for the play area and flexible boards to display the artwork the children produce.

The ‘makeover’ took place over the space of six days, where volunteers from _space and GB Building solutions spent their free time painting, fitting carpets, moving furniture around and preparing the room for use. When the finished room was revealed, staff and children alike were overjoyed with the result. Meriem Evans, Group Secretary commented:
It is hard to express the feeling when seeing the kids very happy that this space is theirs.

Meriem also took on the responsibility of organising donations and coordinating effective usage of time and resources on the project. We would like to recognise certain parties’ generosity and extend a special thank you to the following companies: more…

Dragons Den Event Gets _space Fired Up!

Last Wednesday saw the culmination of two months’ hard work for the _space team and students alike as three schools presented their business ideas to a panel of hungry _space Dragons!

_space have been the first company to sign up to YENE’s ‘One Day’ campaign, where businesses pledge to give up one day of their time or resources to benefit enterprising students. Raising the bar and making life better is what _space stands for as a company and our own _space To Think Differently initiative marked our participation in the initiative. Danielle Gibson, Marketing Coordinator, takes up the story: more…
