Cramlington JLV

Cramlington High School Junior Learning Village

This large extension will provide new facilities for modern teaching accommodation at Cramlington for up to 700 year seven and year eight pupils aged 11 to 13.

The campus-like character of the school is complemented by four modern flexible teaching blocks linked by a tensile fabric roof providing a covered communal street for the pupils and the local
community. The covered street is the flexible heart, providing space for social interaction, dining, performance or a place to relax.

Modern learning environments have been created with 80 sq m classrooms, cluster classrooms, shared learning spaces, team teaching, flexible vocational spaces, outdoor classrooms, open plan learning zones and a biodome for the study of non native species.

High levels of permeability, natural surveillance and flexibility have been provided to support the diverse learning styles of the pupils and the ethos of personalised learning.  The project attracted DCSF funding under the Project Faraday initiative for exemplar science teaching facilities and will be the first of seven national exemplars to be built.  The project has to be delivered within an existing operational school facility, to a tight deadline and to the best value possible.
