Hill Court Haven
_space is happy to announce that after months of blood, sweat and tears, our regeneration of the Hill Court Out of School Club for Children North East is finally complete.
In 2007, a challenge had been issued to _space’s Group 3, who specialise in education, to re-design Hill Court and make it a relaxed, colourful and enjoyable space for the children that use it. In a test worthy of Challenge Anneka, _space people teamed up with GB Building Solutions and spent their free time raising funds and encouraging contacts to donate materials and (in some cases) their time to bring the facility bang up to date with exciting, colourful designs and furnishings.
As the club is somewhere children go to spend their time in after school where they can do homework, play games and watch TV free from the pressures that they’ve experienced, creating a calm and peaceful area was intent behind the design. Alice Laverty, an Interior Designer from Group 3, was behind the design and created an area that accommodates a large amount of storage but manages to make the small space feel bigger. Design features here include a set of bespoke storage units (built by Ace Joinery), a bright curvy carpet for the play area and flexible boards to display the artwork the children produce.
The ‘makeover’ took place over the space of six days, where volunteers from _space and GB Building solutions spent their free time painting, fitting carpets, moving furniture around and preparing the room for use. When the finished room was revealed, staff and children alike were overjoyed with the result. Meriem Evans, Group Secretary commented:
It is hard to express the feeling when seeing the kids very happy that this space is theirs.
Meriem also took on the responsibility of organising donations and coordinating effective usage of time and resources on the project. We would like to recognise certain parties’ generosity and extend a special thank you to the following companies:
