Haltwhistle Swimming and Leisure Centre

Haltwhistle is a small rural market town set close to Hadrian’s Wall on the South Tyne river.  In 1970 the local community set about raising funds to build an outdoor swimming pool and associated changing rooms. The architect for this scheme was _space (then known as Waring and Netts).

Twenty eight years later, this same committed community raised funds for upgrading the facility. With the aid of Lottery money they were able to build a new Leisure Centre with wet and dry changing rooms, a four court badminton Sports Hall and a state of the art fitness suite.  The new building has a central reception and café as well as offices and staff rooms. The funds were sufficient to upgrade the adjacent squash court changing rooms and integrate them into the leisure centre.

The community involvement extended to the new Logo that was designed by local school children. Corporate colours were integrated into the interior design to give a sense of continuity and ownership to the high tech new building.  Situated on the hillside in spectacular countryside this has provided an excellent facility for the whole community.
