Jesmond Pool
The Jesmond Pool project was a total refurbishment of a 2.8 metre deep, five lane pool with associated changing areas and reception area, plus front and rear extensions.
The pool was built in 1938 specifically to serve local residents and school children. It was owned by Newcastle Council who closed it in 1991. A group of residents purchased the pool and re-opened the building in 1992. As part of the design and management competition, _space (then Waring and Netts) were appointed to design the new facilities, which involved total refurbishment of all areas and front and rear extensions.
New facilities include: New changing rooms, toilet and showers with disabled facilities, new offices, First Aid room, steam room and sauna looking onto the Pool Hall, entrance, foyer, reception and a large fitness studio at a new first floor level which can accommodate top-class table tennis.
All facilities were designed to comply with Sport England requirements for Sports Lottery funding. The design risk assessment was particularly onerous as the contractor had no working areas beyond the external walls of the building, which is bounded by public highways on all sides.
The project was delivered on time and within a very challenging, tight budget.
