_space group was founded in Newcastle in 1957 by Arnold Waring and Leonard Netts, as Waring and Netts Partnership. The practice quickly gained a good reputation for social housing and grew steadily, expanding into the education, commercial and health sectors, where its good reputation was cemented by a solid work portfolio.
In 2005 the partnership became a limited company and in 2007, the company moved into a new headquarters - the Spaceworks building, an environment created by our interior design team that promotes our integrated working ethos. We also expanded into Yorkshire, with a base in Leeds.
In 2008, on our 50th birthday, we re-branded as _space group, to suit our evolved state as a total architecture firm. After continued successes, we opened up our Manchester office, in the heart of the city centre in 2009.
In 2011 we opened offices in Hull and London.
